Job Description

The Merchandise Manager is responsible for developing and managing the categories / department strategies, assortment plans, vendor negotiations and relations, exclusive product development, retail price management, merchandise plans, promotional planning and achievement of the financial objectives. Implementation responsibility is shared with corporate office in Hong Kong, Planners, Replenishment and Allocations and Marketing. All activities are channeled through the Director, in order to ensure alignment with overall Team goals and strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Delivers category sales, gross margin and turnover performance to plan.
• Works with Planning Manager partner on forecasting and monitor of overall inventory levels to plan and forecast.
• Develops financial objectives and targets for the team that focus on category and brand growth and profitability.
• Identifies and evaluates sales and gross margin opportunities at the department level.
• Works closely with Director and Senior Vice President, planning, division and distribution partners to develop and manage financial plans.
• Works closely to improve vendor contributions year on year to drive profitability.

Category and Assortment Strategy
• Category responsibilities:
•Food: International and Local
•Destination: travel, gifts, local beauty and destinations related product; international and local
• Develops and communicates an inspired vision and strategy for merchandise departments.
• Leads the merchandise team in formulating an assortment strategy that is consistent with overall business strategy.
• Defines and leads the development and execution of the key business drivers (key brands, items and stores).
• Develops brand exclusives, promotional and sampling strategies.
• Manages the proper execution of the merchandise strategy at the division and location level; takes appropriate action when necessary.
• Drives and executes the brands' floor space planning and allocation for all key locations.
• Works closely with the team partners specifically Planning Manager, Product Sales Managers and Distributor to ensure they are aligned with the merchandise strategy and executing appropriately.
• Evaluates ongoing performance with Director, Senior Vice President, brand partners, planning, division and distribution merchandising team and take action as appropriate.
• Determines seasonal transition strategies.
• Determines appropriate promotional strategies, negotiates vendor support, analyzes performance and adjusts as needed to drive traffic, conversion, spend and units/ticket.
• Monitors performance on new developed products, determines further opportunities based on results.
• Interprets trends appropriate to nationality for their market: Chinese, Japanese, European, Local customers.
• Selects/deletes assortments as appropriate.
• Works closely with the Marketing team to build category awareness.

Brand Management
• Identifies and develops emerging brands for the core customers.
• Develops three-year brand strategies and financial plans as required.
• Promotes a ""win-win"" approach with all key brand partners.
• Maximizes key brands value proposition for our customers by working closely with brands and
Communicating strategic customer needs.
• Develops an assortment strategy for products that are exclusive to DFS or have limited distribution.
• Drives decision-making and problem solving on brand partner issues.
• Negotiates with brands to deliver sales, margins and vendor contributions as per financial commitments.

People Development
• Identifies, recruits, and develops their merchant team.
• Encourages and supports the development of our talented people
• Inspires the team to be innovative and take risks to better drive and understand the business.
• Offers honest and constructive feedback to direct reports and business partners fostering individual and group development.
• Continuously stretches the Team to perform at higher level keeping each Team member focused on the business strategy, innovation, plan and opportunities.

Division Partner Relations
• Develops and maintains effective working partnership with divisions particularly Product Sales Managers and Distributors, while ensuring divisions execute category strategy appropriately.

Key Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Educational Requirements: University Bachelor’s Degree preferred
• Work Experience:
•Minimum of 5 years merchandising experience at buyer-level or equivalent required in a food related role
•Knowledge of the packaged food industry.
•Experience in private label packaged food development.
•Developing and executing planograms, analyzing productivity, executing category management and pricing strategies.
•Development of category strategies by key locations and nationalities.
•Management of “Expiry Dates” and best practices.
• Critical knowledge & skills including tools, software applications, language, etc.
•International business experience preferred.
•Financial and analytical merchandising with a background in buying and/or planning preferred.
•Abilities and handling multiple priorities.
•Food Regulations and labeling requirements.
•Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point
